This Plochionocerus species is a stunning blue rove beetle from the Staphylinidae family! I found this one on the forest floor at Finca Las Piedras and took it back to camp in an attempt to get a few photographs. I say “attempt” because this guy was fast!
Rove beetles have shortened elytra (hardened forewings) that leave a lot of their abdomen exposed, and I find that to be their most distinctive characteristic. Some even look like earwings because of this! The staphylinids are also one of the most diverse beetle families, with over 63,000 species described and countless more to be discovered.
