Laura Galbraith
Originally from Miami, FL, Galbraith's work creates a mix of traditional and digital art. A feminist at heart, she also correlates a connection with the female figure in her work, relating to her experiences as a woman and interactions with other women. Coming from a family of independent women, she re-creates symbolic struggles relative to the people in her life. These interpretations show both the strengths and weaknesses of women, in different stages of their lives. She loves to travel to foreign places, eat exotic foods, and obsess over her "children" (pets).
Influences:
impressionism, Gustav Klimt, Electronica, Puppies, Food

Updated the Shop page with links to the newly available "Love in Wonderland" print (through inPrnt). It's available in both 13"x19" inch and 18"x24" inch sizes. Also, my Zazzle store has five different magnet prints to choose from... definitely check it out if you're in need of some eyecandy for your fridge! (I've got a few on mine as well!)

Started a new piece called, 'Day In, Day Out' from one of my previous sketches... I'm about 70% finished. It's acrylic and ink, on 14"x17" Bristol. I'm really happy to get to put more intestines in my work, those are always fun to draw... I also used glazing for the first time in FOREVER since college, but with acrylic this time (which I've never been too successful with, but I really like how it's working).

I've been experimenting the last few weeks on test paintings, to try to (once again) try to get the drawings to be 90% finished before I tweak on the computer. Below are three results of that, one of them hasn't even been touched by the computer! :) (I liked it too much to finish past the point I was at... can you tell which one??) I've just really missed the feel of painted work and wanted to change things up a big, and get down some thick paint, instead of the watercolor-like stuff I've done previously. Makes me feel rather bold actually...!

And last, but not least, I want to scan more of my typographical oriented stuff and put up here more often... so here is a really nice letter P that I drew on the train ride home tonight. (and a fish lady... I thought it was funny at the time, but now I guess Isee its a bit more creepy...)

... created between years, of course! NY received a ridiculous amount of snow today... it looks like about a foot and a half? (maybe less? but it definitely felt like that much!) I also built my annual snowman (with Nate's help) to commemorate the first snowfall of the season. Had my feet go numb for about two hours, freaking me out 'till i got home and defrosted! (I'm from MIAMI, my blood is not meant for this weather!) And some doodles for you...

Also, I must mention, if anyone is interested in buying some art, PLEASE let me know... New work is piling up, and I need to make more space available. The sterling-silver plate is in a show right now (not up for grabs yet), but the other two paintings are up for grabs. Also, see more paintings for sale in my etsy shop. I will be updating it with other stuff asap.

Anyhow! I wish everyone a merry winter holiday, and lots of peace and love and all that stuff! :) Stay warm (if you're up north!) or enjoy the beach (if you're down south!).
Lots of love from your lovely lady,
-Laura

The digital, finished, version of the curtains painting i did a while back ...
I'm slowly getting shows lined up for 2010! Here I come! :)
Deciding whether or not to visit family for Christmas is a difficult decision, but I'm just so totally broke from trying to pay off debt, and a kinda scary (but not completely horrible!) surgery I have to save up for (which insurance doesn't really cover) ... I keep thinking I wish my parents had enough money to help me out, but then I realize, I should be able to (sorta) pay for things on my own... Which I've been doing since I was in college! It's just... alot to pay out of pocket :( I won't have the surgery for a few months, but here's hoping I come out alive!! (I've never been under the knife, let alone in the hospital for anything!!) Either way, I'm glad this winter break is coming up so soon, so I can have more time to spend doin' the drawin's.
PS! I got engaged a few weeks ago (yay!) and am planning something awesome...! Hopefully by the time it comes around we'll both have enough money to pay for stuff.

Not sure if I'll be able to finish the book before the new year :( But on a high note, I'm finishing up a few things for a show next month and starting some new work for a show going up sometime early next year! Busy Busy Busy! I'll also be revealing the re-designed version of my website sometime next week. Here's a tiny glimpse on what's been going on:

So about a month ago, Nate and I decided to adopt (have) a puppy!! and now I've finally deemed it time to show her off! Her name is Gina, and she's possessed by some sort of demonic spirit. Well... when she's around strangers, at least. Around us, shes the cutest little cuddle bunny that ever existed!! Here's a pic of her and Taco (my first born--errhmm... i mean puppy... hehehe) First photo, from left to right: Taco, Gina, and my leg! Second photo: Gina
aaaaaaand.... on to some stuff.... Previews! I revisted the dancing feathery piece, and started two new ones... under the same sort of style... messing around with a bit of guache this time though.

... Sometimes. Well... most times, actually. A re-do of one of the Travesty piece... And some sketches below. The one of the 4 eyed (well 2 eyed, but with glasses) shark toothed monster is supposed to be me when I'm at work. Usually it's fun, just not when I've got crazy tight deadlines... (and yes, I do like to take my shoes off... feels GOOOOOOD!)

I've been having the weirdest dreams lately.

So I've been injected with a new sense of where I'm going (mostly due to some coworkers) ... and I've finished up the new drawing i started on my vacation in the Adirondack Mountains (Just thought I'd throw in that AuSable Chasm really IS the Grand Canyon of the east... also, the tubing there is ... tubacious!). Anyway, here's the analog half:

and the digital half:

...which will all be halved back together again and unified once i print this out on some canvas and put on the finishing acrylic touches!

I finally got around to not being lazy and decided I'd post up some work I did over the past two months and update everyone. (yes! I'm still alive!)
Anyway, this last month has been just a crazy awesome enjoying of life and non-internet related stuff. Went to a bunch of really fun NYC free concerts and movies, went down to Miami for a weekend, moved into a new studio apt, and my awesomely fantabulous boyfriend, Nate Bear, is now living with me! He's looking for a job, so if anyone knows of anything graphic designerly or illustration based work that fits his style, he'd love to hear from you.

This one's pretty small, about 15" x 15" started with acrylic+ink and then finished on the computer. I really love how the tattoo turned out.
Just another sequel to my "Oh Me, Oh My" piece. It's all acrylic, no digital in this one. Measures about 25" x 16". I've been trying to stray away from finishing/creating work on the computer only because I'd like to have a wider range of gallery work to show.

Also, the above is a preview of a skin I submitted to Infectious. Please vote for it if you like it!

So, I'm not sure whether to be excited or disappointed, but I think I'm more excited than disappointed, because at least I got my foot in *a* door (the image above made it in) ... I got into AI-AP's website portion of the competition (I think 500 people got in... which is why I'm a bit dissapointed, but hey, something's better than nothing? Maybe this is a good thing?) On the bright side, because I (sorta) got into it... I do get an invite to the party? (yay!) So maybe i'll bump into some big-wig illustrators while I'm there. *feels smug*
Also! Going to have more art at Destination NY's gallery again! The opening is April 30th from 6 to 8 pm. I'm going to try my hardest to be there, but if you don't have anything to do, definitely swing by and say hello!

... only because I hate it when people on the train look over my shoulder when I draw... so I end up rotating my sketchbook to the least drawn on area of the spread... and covering the rest with my arm... not sure if that's the best way to do it, but it makes it easier for me to ignore idle eyes... :D
I've also gotten into the habit of scanning my sketchbook pages pre-maturely... Like the last post of my sketchbook... has a bunch of other sketches on it now... hmm...

...every where you look around... ! ...blah blah blah, and however else the song goes... This new piece is about 17" x 18"... started in acrylic and ink, and finished on the computer.
And in other news... I've been getting into vegan/raw food lately and... who knew it tasted so good?!?! There were things that tasted like milk and ice cream that had no milk or butter or ANYTHING in it!! Crazyyyy....!! I love it! Any who, here are some more sketchbook pages... I still can't believe I paid so much for my new sketchbook this time. Do not... I repeat... DO NOT buy moleskin sketchbooks from Utrecht... Save yourself the $5 and get it at Barnes and Noble!

PS. I'm on twitter thanks to a certain someone who forced me to join! I feel so up-to-date again!! SO MODERN YET FUTURISTIC! My username is inulg.

I've been pretty busy ( I swear!! ). Proof can be seen in my studio/living room... (yeah, I know, I know... I need to get a real studio space... )
And here's another preview of something else... Yes, another crappy phone pic, but... its just enough to get you wanting to see more, right....? I promise I'll post everything up once I've finished it all (which will probably be sometime this week!!! I'm not sure how I'm going to pull that off, but I guess its going to have to happen!)
